Rocky salt

PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carroll

“Dad what did you cook today?”

“A gourmet feast. Why?”

“It was terrible.  I couldn’t eat it.”

“Couldn’t eat it?  Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.”

“But it was half cooked and too salty.”

“You still gotta eat it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how….”

“Mom! Dad’s been watching Rocky again.”

So this is the second entry for this week.  I normally avoid only dialogue stories but hope it makes you smile.  Also I should point out, the dad is using quotes from the Rocky movie ;-)

The Champ

The young boy looked at the snow outside.  He smiled as this meant school closure.  Surely Joe would keep the gym open today, he thought, as he sparred with his mirrored image.

His thoughts went back to summer when he rode his shiny new bicycle to the fair at Columbia Gym.  When it finished his bicycle was missing.  In tears he went to Policeman Joe Martin.

"If I find the kid who stole my bike," he sobbed, "I'll whup him."

“Cassius you better learn to box first before looking for a fight. Come join the boxing classes I run here.”

Inspired by Rochelle, I too have attempted historical fiction this week.  The young boy was indeed the Greatest and this is supposed to be how it all started.
Update: I didn't want to name the boy and let the reader find out.  But i am taking Rochelle's suggestion on board and putting the boy's name at the end.

Wilted Flower

PHOTO PROMPT © Marie Gail Stratford

On gloomy days I find myself
On an abandoned bed all alone
Feet tracing arabesque patterns
Lying unfettered on empty sheets

I penned panegyrics in your name
Those words now empty and hollow
An apotheosis of longing and desire
Decayed, rotting and falling away

The once blossoming flower
Stands withered and forlorn
Drooping leaves
And petals fallen

On gloomy days I find myself
Harking back to brighter days
That perfect first flush of love
Dug in deep and planted roots

I hold the wilted flower close
Inhale the fragrance of dying rose
It perishes today

But tomorrow it blooms anew

A very late entry but I find myself attempting a poem again.  I have to confess that I find writing poetry harder than sticking to prose.  You also hope that the readers will appreciate the direction you took and maybe enjoyed reading it too.

Home Again

PHOTO PROMPT © Dale Rogerson

Do you remember our first snowfall?
Us entranced by snowflakes fluttering down.
Our harsh former homelands were never cold,
The unrelenting sun leaving lands parched and dry.

Here we stood a continent away,
Wary at the kindness of strangers.
How could we not be?
Our very own had left us to die.

I saw you smile again that day,
As you ran outside like a child.
Mouth open devouring snowflakes,
The cold warming your heart once more.

Late into the night,
You watched the soft glow of lights.
The smile flickering on your lips,
I knew this was home again.

Stepping out of my comfort zone again this week with a poem.  Poetry is very personal and people interpret poetry in their own way and I am hoping that maybe you read it the way I felt writing it.

See Food

Still waters run deep

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard someone say that I’d probably have enough for an all you can eat buffet at Pablo’s Seafood Diner.  What? You were expecting me to say millions? Have you seen the price list at Pablo’s?

Actually eating an unlimited buffet is an art by itself.

Starting with clothing.  No not about fashion but just remember the clothes should be loose fitting and enable expansion.

Pace yourself it’s not a sprint but a marathon.

Don’t forget the cash.  Pablo’s bouncers tend to dump non-paying clientele into the waterfront.

A very last minute entry from me for this week.  I am very 'pro-castination' ;-)  I just hope it's not a dud.
